Ancient Rome was from 150 BC to 455 AD, so for 600 years, the largest city on planet earth, and from 133 BC to around 370 AD, so for 500 years, Rome had an incredible 1 million inhabitants. The first city in Europe to reach such population figures again was London in 1800, so 1430 years after Rome. But how was this possible? Rome only had a comparatively small city area of 20 to 25 square kilometers, yielding a mind boggling population density of 40 to 50 thousand inhabitants per km^2, so it would still rank among the most densely populated cities on earth, even today. How could it achieve this without skyscrapers? The answer lies in the insula, or roman apartment building. Rome had during its peak 46,600 of those buildings, and each one housed around 20 people on multiple stories. The height was at some point 8 stories, until they were restricted to 5 or 6 stories, because too many of them had collapsed. And this is in essence how ancient Rome achieved 1 million inhabitants.
