Easy And Cheap Homestead Gate

Today, we are going to show you how we built our two main entry homestead gates from scratch!

Hi and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.

We are giving you all the silent treatment, yep the silent treatment :) These gates were such a big project and we thought it might be better for you just to watch as we put them together.

You all know we love to save a buck, so we decided to DIY these gates instead of buying pre-made gates. We also decided to go with untreated lumber and protective treated it ourselves with the Shou Sugi Ban/Yaki Sugi process. Most of the wood we used for this gate was inexpensive 1 x 6’s. We will be doing some reinforcement of these gates as needed after we get an idea of how they perform. Douglas found some discarded, rusted barbed wire and we had some things that we brought from Colorado to “decorate” the front of the gates.
