Netherlands continued preparations for Friday's World Cup quarter-final against Argentina with a training session at their base in Doha on Thursday.

'Die Oranje', who are seen as the strongest footballing nation that has never won a World Cup, failed to qualify for the previous finals four years ago, but they were runners-up in 2010 and third-place finishers four years later.

Louis van Gaal's side finished top of Group A in Qatar with seven points, and they then picked off the USA in the round of 16 to set up a last eight encounter with Lionel Messi and company.

Friday's match is a repeat of the 1978 World Cup final, which then hosts Argentina won in extra-time, while the teams' only meeting in the last 16 years was in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup, where Netherlands were knocked out on penalties.
