The crater, which has a diameter of 70 meters (230 ft), a width of 60 meters (200 ft), and a depth of about 20 meters (66 ft), was formed following the fall of a natural gas rig while it was working in the area in 1971 during the era of the former Soviet Union.

In order to prevent methane gas from leaking out of the hole and harming the environment and living organisms, scientists decided to set it on fire in the hope that the fire would consume the gas within several days, but the fire has not stopped since then until now.

The natural gas field is located in the Druze region in Turkmenistan and extends under the Caspian Sea. The gas content of the field is estimated at about 8 billion cubic meters, which means that it is the fourth largest gas field found in the world.
