Cottonwood Pass Over-nite Backpacking Trip

Wanting to try out some new gear I had recently purchased, I left the SoCal area after work on a Thursday evening in perpetration for a longer trip scheduled in the fall. I arrived at the Horseshoe Meadow area in the Golden Trout wilderness around 11:00 PM, setup camp and went to bed.

The trip was set to be a quick little overnight backpack over Cottonwood Pass and on to Chicken Spring Lake, which is just over a half-mile off the Pacific Crest Trail. I had hopes of doing some angling for our state fish, Oncorhynchus aguabonita or Golden Trout. Unfortunately, Chicken Spring Lake appears to be too shallow and unable to sustain trout throughout the winter freeze. Not every fishing expedition is going to be a success, but that’s okay, it beats being at work.
