At dusk in spring, an American Woodcock announces its presence to females with a distinctive "peent" call on the ground, then bursts into a crazy zig zag flight high overhead. He chirps melodically before coming back to the ground not far from where he started. He then begins his nasal "peent" before taking to the air again, repeating the cycle until dark.
