TOPIC SYNOPSIS

In the 12th century two mysterious green children appeared in the village of Woolpit, in Suffolk, England.

The two children were brother and sister. They appeared completely normal, except for having green coloured skin.

The children spoke an unknown language, acted nervously, and wore clothe made from unfamiliar materials. Strangely, the children only ate broad beans, but eventually learned to eat other food. At which point they became normal in colouration.

Also strangely, the brother and sister were baptized, and the brother died shortly after this event (demon baby?)

The Green Children of Woolpit were documented in William of Newburgh’s “Historia rerum Anglicarum” (1189) and Ralph of Coggeshall’s “Chronicum Anglicanum” (1220).
