A liminal space is the time between the 'what was' and the 'next.' It is a place of transition, waiting, and not knowing.

Liminal spaces are both physical and mental locations.

Physically, liminal spaces can be something like an empty city street after dark, an abandoned shopping mall, or even an old hangout that you visit after a long time.

Mentally, liminal spaces can be something like anytime you're going through major changes in your life such as moving to a new area, working at a new job for the first time, going through a breakup or a marriage, death of a loved one, graduations, etc.

Liminal spaces are often associated with unsettling feelings or negative emotions including disturbing feelings and feelings of disorientation, the invocation of terror or dread, and feelings of panic or a sensation of “wanting to leave” the area.
