THE WORLD HATES BELIEVERS WHO ARE FAITHFUL TO SAY WHAT JESUS SAYS

Jesus elaborated on the inevitability and reason why the world hates His disciples (15:18-16:4) Jesus set His command to love one another in context to being hated for His sake (15:17-18).

“…love one another. If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. …because you are not of the world…the world hates you.…If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you…21These things they will do to you for My name’s sake…” (Jn. 15:17-21)

Jesus used the word, “hate,” 8 times in 15:18-25. This hatred will lead to more than being censored or passed over in a job promotion, etc. We feel violated when someone hates us; we never get used to being hated. John prepared others in part by urging them to anticipate being hated (1 Jn. 3:13). Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you.

John 15 is the “intimacy with God” chapter (15:1-17). Intimacy with God is essential to being empowered to walk in joy when hated (15:18-25). Jesus intentionally connected these themes.
