Democrats have cemented their control of the US Senate by winning a bitterly fought seat in Georgia, according to projections.

Raphael Warnock fended off Republican challenger Herschel Walker in a run-off vote, after neither candidate secured 50% of the vote in last month’s midterm elections.

The result means that President Joe Biden's party now holds the upper chamber of Congress by 51-49, and for Warnock, he declared that “the people have spoken”, in his victory speech.

Meanwhile, it comes as a blow to by former President Donald Trump, who endorsed American football legend and political newcomer Walker as a candidate.
