US Emergency Action Messages – December 6 2022 – callsign BEFRIEND

Today featured unusual traffic from 19.47 – 20.38 UTC. We typically see message traffic for any given day start with one of either two character sets – for most of November, either V5 or GF, but V5 was rotated out yesterday in favor of PM. So we would've expected PM and GF today, but we actually saw PM, GF, *and* GW. GW messages were (relatively) frequently repeated and while I did not make recordings of every instance of a GW transmission, I have noted them on the daily timecard.

I believe this is likely to be an intended clear-cut differentiation from 'standard' traffic. Whether these are differentiated from standard traffic because they are test messages, messages for a top-secret and high priority mission, or something else, I don't know.

"The HF-GCS is used by the United States Air Force to send instructions for their operations through messages, and most commonly send Emergency Action Messages (EAMs). The HF-GCS is not exclusive to the USAF, and is used by other countries too, but not as often. They also send higher priority messages known as “Skyking Messages” which will even be read over-top and interrupt an EAM to be read. Both of these messages are time sensitive and are read live in NATO Phonetic letters. The primary HF-GCS frequency is 11175 kHz, and it transmits 24/7 on that frequency as well as 8992 kHz. The HF-GCS also transmits on 4724, 6712 (Croughton), 6739, 13200, and 15016 during their scheduled times, which is still most of the day." - https://www.numbers-stations.com/usa/hfgcs/
