We are good at seeing other people’s specks (The speck and the log Matthew 7:1-5)
We have developed a generation that is great at picking out the faults of those around us while ignoring the faults with in ourselves. It is super easy for us to pick out what others do that irritate us, point the finger at someone when they mess up, and play armchair quarterback around the water cooler on how we would never be so foolish. Buy seeing the worst in everyone around us we are we feel better about ourselves because we know those people are worse than we are. The problem with this mentality is that we just end up point the finger at everyone else and never really address the problems we have in our life. In this parable of Jesus, He lets His followers know that we all have big problems (beams) in our own lives that needs fixed before we can ever consider helping someone else. Our society has gotten to the point to where it almost seems that people are happy to see others fail or mess up just so they can point the finger.
I once heard an evangelist say that most people compare their selves to the worst of the worst around them because this makes them look like the spotless lamb in the room. If I am standing in a room with Adolf Hitler, Jeffery Dahmer, and Osama Bin Laden then the little mistakes I have in my life do not even register compared to these men’s heinous acts. Therefore, we are good at seeing other people’s specks (problems) because it makes us look so much better to know that there is public failures are out there worse than us. The problem with this mindset is that this is not how things work, instead of us all standing before the worst of the worst we need to imagine ourselves standing before the best of the best, Jesus Christ. When we stand before holiness, righteousness, and perfection we realize just how filthy and messed up we are. Suddenly our attention is not on everyone else’s mistakes a much as it is on how wretched we truly are and how much we need mercy and forgiveness. None of us can stand guiltless before the Holy standards of God, therefore in our parable Jesus says that we should first remove the beam from our eye before we even consider helping others. We must deal with our sin first and the only way to do that is by applying the blood of Jesus Christ to our lives and allowing His sacrifice to cleanse and purify us.
