Who could tell at the time, but, apparently the new year’s fire that raged through and gutted South Africa’s National Assembly building, right at the beginning of 2022, clearly showed us that this is going to be one very hot political year. And it did not disappoint. With a homeless parliament, for now still squatting in the City of Cape Town Chambers, and a president thuma mina’ing his way towards impeachment, South Africa limps and lunges forward from crisis to crisis.

Terror, terrorism, to terrorise, and perpetrate an act of terror are appropriate words to launch into blindspot’s take on the year that was. This year that will soon run out of calendar space will in history be remembered as the period of time wherein the world system was torn in two.

But why terror? Perhaps because the world system, and recent history has shown us that global systems, financial, political, or industrial is only permanent in so far as it can outlast, or overcome crises, shocks, or sudden catastrophes of human- or naturally induced kinds.
