Serial killer Archibald “Mad Dog” McCafferty has often been called the Charles Manson of Australia. A Scottish immigrant, by the time he was 24 years old he had 35 convictions of every kind.

He married Janice Redington at 22, and he was often so violent to her that he was sent to a temporary mental institution more than once. In 1973, when he was 25, they had a son, Craig. But when he was 6 months old, Janice fell asleep while breast-feeding him and accidentally smothered him. The baby’s death was the final push that sent McCafferty over the edge.

He claimed to have seen his dead boy’s spirit, who told him that he could bring him back to life by murdering seven people. McCafferty gathered a gang of teenagers and with their help killed three people. One of the members confessed to the police, fearing he was next, and Archibald went to jail where he continued his quest by organizing the stabbing of a fellow immate, his fourth victim.

In 1997, he was paroled and deported to Scotland. In 2004, he was sent back to prison for slashing his wife’s arm and holding his 5 year old son at knifepoint. After he was released again, he’s worked making toys and in a women’s boutique.
