Headless robots called Mini Cheetahs, developed by US researchers, were taught to play soccer.
Built at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the robot used machine learning to negotiate objects through trial and error.
Robots can walk on different types of terrain and, in theory, can be pushed and kicked and still remain upright.
Daniela Russ, director of MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab, said other real-world applications of the technology used include traversing hazardous areas and carrying objects for humans. It states that it is to instruct the robot to do so.
