Iran's deputy police, tasked with enforcing strict Islamic dress codes, will be disbanded, the country's prosecutor general said.

Mohammad Jafar Montazeri made comments at a religious meeting on Sunday, but they have not yet been confirmed by other authorities.

He said the sub-squad "had nothing to do with justice and was shut down where it was set up."

Iran has seen months of protests after 22-year-old Mercer Amini was arrested by deputies for violating strict hat rules.
