◆All Patterns are written in 12 keys, as knowing your music in 12 keys will definitely help you become a better prepared musician for any possible situation.
- I have always been fascinated by how music can greatly vary from one region to the next on the same planet. How can music sound so different though it’s all made by using the same 12 notes of the keyboard?. I soon realized that the answer was in the selection of the notes musicians use when they create music, including improvisation, and that very selection of the notes is what we call “scale”. If you were in medieval times in Europe listening to troubadours, you would have heard Major or Natural Minor Scales. If you go to a small village in Africa you could hear pentatonic scales. If you are in South Spain, you would be surrounded by the Spanish Phrygian sound. Scales can make us travel around the world in music, like flavors in cuisine.
- When you practice the following exercises, take them as ingredients just like the ones in your kitchen, or as colors in a painting. Study them carefully and get to know them first, then practice repeatedly to learn how to utilize them, so eventually you’d be able to choose them accordingly even while improvising.
