The Innocence Chronicles | Ep. 05 - Anthony Mazza: 47 Years Incarcerated After Wrongful Conviction

Boston Police discovered the body of a 34-year-old bank manager on July 5, 1972 inside an apartment occupied by Robert Anderson (20 years old). After breaking a window, leaping from the apartment, and running from police before his eventual arrest just days later, Anderson pointed a motivated finger at Anthony Mazza (25 years old), whom he had met months earlier and had allowed to stay at the apartment for a few days.

Mazza and Anderson were both charged with murder, but Anderson's charges were dropped after he testified before the grand jury. As you might imagine, Mazza's trial featured lengthy testimony from Robert Anderson, with additional testimony from Robert's younger brother, William Anderson.

Anthony Mazza was convicted on April 3, 1973, and was sentenced to life without parole. For more than FOUR DECADES, Mazza professed his innocence and continued to petition for his case to be reopened (almost all of that time without legal assistance) until the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court vacated his conviction on April 21, 2020 (the Commonwealth later dismissed all charges on March 3, 2021).
