Kingdom minded people look within first (The speck and the log Matthew 7:1-5)
I can say that our society has made a turn in the past decades towards a pessimistic society, one in which most seem to expect the worst out others around them. We have lost confidence in our fellow man as our societies has moved from leaving doors unlocked at night and kids freely playing in neighborhoods to cautiousness and lack of trust. A lot of this is well founded as our society is on a continual moral decline but I also believe much of it is since we spend much of our lives examining others and rarely spend time in self-examination. We must be willing to realize that we are part of the problem, we are not perfect, and that we do not have it all together all the time. When Jesus says in this parable that one should first remove the beam from our eye before we try to remove the speck from someone else, He was saying that we are probably more messed up than those we are trying to help. Kingdom minded people first look within to fix what is wrong before looking at those around them.
The life of a believer is one of continuing sanctification of oneself, a process where we are continually removing things from our lives that distance us from God. The closer we get to God the more that He reveals things in our life that needs to be cleaned up and removed. I really feel that as believers that we find ourselves in a dangerous state when we see everyone’s faults around us but neglect to recognize our own. In 2 Corinthians 13:5 Paul tells us that we should constantly be examining ourselves to ensure that we are on the right path in our walk with Christ. This means some deep stairs into the mirror where we are brutal honest with ourselves concerning our spiritual state and relationship with God. Are we where we need to be? Are we doing the things we need to be doing? Have we let anything creep in our lives that does not belong? Are we being a positive light for the Kingdom of God? If we are honest with ourselves then 100 percent of us with find something that we need to work on and allow the Holy Spirit to lovingly correct us and set us back on the right path.
