Making presentation pieces is fun woodworking. It allows us to get more into the artistry of woodworking than simply making things that are utility kinds of things like chairs, tables, boxes, cabinets and cutting boards. I gives us the opportunity to try some new things and see how they might work ... or not, as the case may be. In my case I had all sorts of cool ideas and some fantastic woods that I had been keeping for special kinds of things, and this could be a place where I could use some of them. I was disappointed to see that when I tried the tools against my special woods, I could see they were overshadowing the tools, which was the whole purpose of making the plaque. Sometimes simpler is better and in this case making a more simple plaque turned out to be the best alternative. Using my scroll saw, reciprocating sander and router, I fashioned a lovely piece of wood that is infact the background for the silver tools and the background should not overwhelm the tools. The finish on the wood was Osmo, and it give me a certain amount of sheen but still lets the grain and detail of the wood shine through and helps to highlight the silver tools ... as it should.
