Making your own Spalted Wood is not as hard as it might seem, more than anything it takes patience, but is a great way to get free lumber. With a little bit of instruction and luck, you take wood from your own woodworking shop and achieve figured woods that are hard at best to acquire, and if your lighter colored wood like Spalted Maple, Spalted Holly, or Spalted Birch, your results will show even better as darker woods such as Oaks, Elms and Mahogany's tend to hide spalting to a degree, with some fungi you can get different colors and almost every fungus will give you tone woods separated by lines of spalt ... all very attractive woods. Remember the although spalted wood has a great look, it should never be used for structural application as it's essentially rotten wood.
