The beauty of woodworking projects is often enhanced by using wood that has visual appeal and one of those appeals is something called "spalting" which often appears as mottling or lines in boards and logs and is caused by a fungus which is part of decay process of wood. Wood spalting like spalted maple is highly sought after by woodworkers for their furniture enhancement, wooden box making, picture frames, jewelry boxes, and other higher-value wood objects to give a uniqueness to their objects. Today I am searching the forest for naturally occurring spalting free lumber for later milling into usable woodworking boards.
