The rate of return (ROR) is the sum of money that has been realized over the course of time. It represents the difference between the gains and losses. In other words the rate of return is the amount gained (or loss) compared to the cost of an initial investment which is usually expressed as an amount. If the ROR is positive, it's considered to be a gain. However, if the ROR is negative, it is a loss on the investment. https://investeddata.com/stock-return-calculator
