Trump LOSING His Grip On Republican Party?

Prominent Republicans are dipping their toes in the water to find out if they can finally bail on Trump. But the fact of the matter is Trump still has a firm stranglehold on the GOP base. If there is another clown car primary in 2024 Trump will certainly get a plurality of votes. Unless the entire Republican machine can rally behind a strong primary opponent, Trump will very likely be the nominee in 2024.

Vinnie Holiday: It definitely does seem like a good chunk of the Republican party and base is moving away from Trump seems more permanent. But I know you have consistently argued that Trump will continue to rule the party. What am I not understanding about how you see this playing out? I'm not convinced of the base. I haven't seen evidence that the base is moving away frankly in terms of his numbers. his popularity still seems to be there. I will also say if you look at the numbers in 2016 at this point they're not any better for him in 2016 there's certainly not any better than they are here. If there is a mechanism in which the Republican Party can somehow scare everybody out of the primary except for like Ron DeSantis and I don't know Tulsi Gabbard or you know somebody else one or two other people. Then I think there's a chance. But the fact is that Trump still has a plurality of support and it's the most unshakable support. And so that's what I think II think that if it's if there is a field of more than four or five candidates I just don't see how people like well I like DeSantis well I like Asa Hutchinson well I like… yeah Trump's a plurality guy. Which is the guy who'll get the like the plurality in the primary and in our in my estimation too. And to your guy's Point too like 2015 this time around there this was still when people were like oh like Trump's a sideshow. A boom and bust like all the others. I'll tell you this. This is Scott Walker. I was reminded of this in 2015. Chris Hayes had an episode where it was like a rotisserie or a lottery what do you call those? Like a draft. Yeah it was like a draft of you know mock draft of candidates who would get through a primary and there were four of us I can't remember who the other people were, to be honest and there were 20 because at that point there was like 20 people who had declared and it was sort of like becoming a clown car. Donald Trump had yet to declare and he was like a bonus joke pick. Nobody took him seriously. And I mean it was completely out of the question whether you would even be relevant in the thing if he was even to run. And I remember the day I also happened to be on Hayes the night that he came down the escalator.
