Crisis of Legitimacy: Diversity and the Collapse of the State

The modern state--in particular, the modern, Western state--is facing a self-inflicted crisis of legitimacy. Increasingly, rather than giving their primary allegiance to the state, people are choosing to ascribe their primary allegiance to some other characteristic they feel defines them. Usually, this is race, ethnicity, religion, or political ideology. This all stems from the state losing the mandate of the people--from which they derive their power--by virtue of the fact that they no longer represent the interests of the people. A government, in fact, cannot represent the the will of a multicultural nation. For this reason, diversity is the death of nations.
