Wendy Cope is a poet and writer known for her witty verse and reflective wisdom. She was born on July 21, 1945 in Erith, Kent. She grew up reading poetry with her parents in an environment surrounded by the arts.

In 1986, she published her first book of poetry, Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis. The book was an instant success as readers fell in love with Cope’s humorous usage of wordplay, parody, and satire. After this success, Cope became a freelance writer, focusing on her poetry.
