If Jesus saved the world, why do we need salvation?

One of the fundamental doctrines of Christianity is that Jesus came down to save the world. His sacrificial death served as the necessary atonement to pave the way for eternal life in the future.

Yet, the Bible also tells us that we need to serve God to the end of our lives to get salvation (Hebrews 3:14). Why is that, exactly, since Christ saved us through his sacrificial death?
