Wenger says 'England at the PEAK to deliver!' | Klinsmann on Germany's woes | Well wishes for Pele

FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development Arsene Wenger praised England's progress in recent international tournaments, billing Gareth Southgate's team as one of the international sides in contention for this year's World Cup.

Speaking at a media briefing of the FIFA Technical Study Group on Sunday, the former Arsenal manager also said that he believes France have a strong chance of defending their title from four years ago, and that Belgium's failure to reach the knockout stages in Qatar is due to injuries and to an aging squad past their prime.

Both France and England play their last of 16 round matches later on Sunday, against Poland and Senegal respectively.

Arsene Wenger and Jurgen Klinsmann sent their wishes to Pele on Sunday following news about his ill health.

The Brazilian football legend has a respiratory infection and has been at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo since Tuesday.

82-year-old Pele had a colon tumor removed in September 2021 and has since gone through chemotherapy.

"We are all getting the news that he is not very well, we wish him to recover quickly and hopefully", said Wenger during a media briefing of FIFA's Technical Study Group on Sunday. "I spoke to his agent not long ago, he was not as pessimistic as the news we get at the moment, so I was a bit surprised and shocked that Pele is not well.

Brazilian media said on Saturday that Pele's chemotherapy is not working and that doctors had decided to put him on palliative care, although the news was not confirmed by the Albert Einstein hospital.

"Pele is in our prayers, we hope that he recovers as quickly as possible and that he stays with us for many, many years to go", said Klinsmann. "He's just such a wonderful person, and he's been the greatest of all, there's no doubt about it."
