In an interview released in April 2019 (video link below), Miriam Sternberg, a 97 year-old Holocaust survivor from Hungary, relates the details of an exchange between her mother and a gentile acquaintance who sought to save their family from deportation to Auschwitz. The following is a translation of a portion of the Hebrew transcript:
“...[He couldn’t save all of us] if my mother came and my father came and all my sister’s [family]. So he said:
“ ‘How can I save so many? ... Tomorrow there’s going to be a “program” in the afternoon. I won’t look up. Tell your people they should run away from this.’
“My mother said: ‘Dr. Kastner says not to raise an alarm, it’s all lies, you’re going to work.’
“My mother said [to us, after the conversation]: ‘Who am I supposed to believe, the gentile or the Jew?’
“So my mother believed the Jew. And she never came back.”
