There were immediate concerns for the millions of migrant workers who'd be coming to the small but wealthy Gulf nation of Qatar to build all that is required to play host to the tournament. They were held in virtual bondage by what's called the Kafala System. which binds workers to employers.When we visited Qatar in 2014, the conditions were appalling. We eat, we drink whether or not we wake up the next day is the fear. In 2017, Qatar agreed to reform its labor laws to dismantle the Kafala system.
