Mount Semeru volcano erupts violently, again! 🇮🇩

The Mount Semeru volcano, located in the eastern part of the Indonesian island of Java, has erupted violently again earlier this morning local time. The same volcano also erupted exactly one year ago, on December 4, 2021. That eruption killed at least 51 people and thousands were made homeless.

Hot pyroclastic ash clouds have been observed a few times already, with the larges reaching some 7 kilometers from the summit. The eruption that started after midnight seems smaller than the one a year ago, but evacuations of two villages is completed and people are not allowed into the danger zone of a few kilometers around it’s summit.

The volcano is some 150 km east of the resort island of Bali, which is currently not affected. Air traffic is informed to keep distance from the observed ash cloud that could be as high as 15 kilometers above sea level, or over 10 km above the summit of the volcano. If you are in the area, make sure to check with local authorities whether it’s safe to travel.
