One of the biggest tortoises in the world is the Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea), which is native to the Seychelles' Aldabra Atoll of islands. The fossil record shows that gigantic tortoises formerly lived on every continent and several islands, with the exception of Australia and Antarctica. Historically, giant tortoises were discovered on many of the western Indian Ocean islands as well as Madagascar. With the exception of the Aldabran gigantic tortoise on the island atoll of Aldabra, many of the Indian Ocean species were believed to have gone extinct by 1840 due to overexploitation by European sailors.
