Richard Laurence "Darby" McCarthy.
Born In the sand hills outside of Cunnamulla in Western Queensland at “The YUMBA” Aboriginal Camp.
He was the tenth (10) of thirteen (13) children.
It was a very different time then.
Born black in a known racist town wasn’t a great start to life for
Richard Laurance McCarthy.
But this little fella would not let that deter him.
He was about to take the world… by storm.
His name would become legendary
He was to become the best in his chosen field.
He would travel the world.
Meet the most unlikely of people.
As an Australian Aboriginal of that time this was a remarkable feat, he became an inspiration for all who were interested in his journey.
Being Aboriginal in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and even today the cards were stacked against him.
Darby McCarthy was indeed an exceptional individual
and one of Australia’s great jockeys.
A worthy induction into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame
as his story is one of achieving greatness against all odds.
