Downbeat Martinez and Belgium players return to Brussels in wake of shock World Cup exit

The Belgium squad returned to Brussels in the early hours of Saturday morning (3rd December) after crashing out of the World Cup without progressing from the group stages.

Notable absentees in Brussels included Thomas Meunier and Axel Witsel who reportedly left earlier, and paid for their own flights.

2022 is the first time that Belgium had failed to progress from the group stage of a World Cup since 1998 and the squad has been plagued by rumours of infighting.

They scraped a 1-0 win over Canada in their opening game, before losing 2-0 to Morocco and being held to a 0-0 draw to finish third in Group F.

The exit saw Roberto Martinez end his tenure as team coach.
