Mating is a little tricky for eagles with all those talons; the male must balance on the female's back while balling the talons (folding the hallux talon under) or perching gently, so as not to injure her.
Bonded pairs may mate at any time of year, but they are only fertile during nesting season and their mating increases in frequency until eggs are laid and incubation begins. These behaviors follow hormonal changes in nesting season.
