Germany squad members return from Qatar after early exit from World Cup

The Germany World Cup squad returned home on Friday, after being eliminated from the tournament in Qatar in the group stage.

Some players disembarked in Munich, while others travelled on to Frankfurt.

Hansi Flick's side finished 3rd in the Group E table after losing their opening game 2-1 to Japan and drawing 1-1 with Spain in their second.

Thursday's 4-2 win over Costa Rica was not enough to save them, with Japan stunning Spain 2-1 to top the table, with Spain following them into the last 16 by virtue of a superior goal difference over Germany.

The 2014 World champions were also eliminated from the group phase at the 2018 tournament in Russia.

And at last year’s coronavirus-delayed European Championship, Germany were knocked out in the last 16 by England.

Germany is facing another round of soul-searching and the president of their football federation Bernd Neuendorf is due to meet Flick, sporting director Oliver Bierhoff and vice president Hans-Joachim Watzke to discuss the fallout from the latest disappointment next week.

Demand is growing for a marked improvement in the team's performance before Germany hosts the 2024 European Championship.
