Today I am going to show you all my tips, tricks, and tools for doing laundry with no electricity or running water 100% off grid here on our homestead.

Hi and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.

I know, laundry is not really all that glamorous, is it?! But, it still needs to get done! I have found when you are washing clothes by hand, you are much more careful with how often you wash and hand washing also gets things so much cleaner!

Here are the steps to washing clothes off grid in a condensed version…for more detail and helpful tips, you’ll want to watch the video :

Pre-treat stains with full strength Sal Suds for tough stains, diluted Sal Suds or white vinegar and water (1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water) for lighter stains.
Place load of clothes in wash bucket and fill wash bucket with enough water to cover your clothes so that they can be easily moved around with the wash wand.
Add soap of choice, I love the laundry sheets listed below for a fresh, clean smell and I especially like these for sheets and towels. I also use Oasis Biocompatible soap for a very light scent (usually use this one on Doug’s clothes) or Sal Suds for a more woodsy smell.
Add laundry peroxide…I use ¼ to ½ a cup per load. This helps sanitize, freshen, and brighten clothes.
Use the wash wand to “agitate” clothes and use the wash board to scrub any stubborn stains. At this point I usually let the clothes soap for about 15 minutes and then I come back and do the agitation process again with the wash wand.
Add about half the amount of fresh, clean water to the rinse tub that you used for the wash tub. Add ¼ to ½ a cup of white vinegar to water. White vinegar helps to neutralize any linger bad odors, brightens, and best of all helps to soften your clothes. Drying clothes outside can make them feel stiff and the white vinegar helps a lot with this.
Gently wring your freshly cleaned clothes and then transfer washed clothes to the rinse tub. Rinse each piece thoroughly and then run through the wringer. Hang them to dry and then enjoy your freshly washed/dried clothes.

All of the laundry water is recycled back onto our property to water our plants, so the water gets used twice which is very ecofriendly and sustainable! That’s all there is to it! Once your laundry is set up, it’s really easy to manage :)
