Messi looks relaxed in training as Argentina gear up for Australia

Lionel Messi had plenty to smile about in training on Friday as he prepares to make the 1,000th appearance of his career in Saturday's World Cup last-16 tie with Australia.

Argentina and Australia both escaped Group C in dramatic circumstances at the Qatar World Cup on Wednesday and just three days later they meet the at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium for a place in the quarter-finals.

Both nations' World Cup adventures now continue into the knockout stages, following the Albiceleste's recovery from a shock opening loss to Saudi Arabia and the Socceroos' defeat of Denmark in midweek.

Having overcome a faltering start to their latest World Cup campaign, an Argentina squad fuelled by a hard-fought victory over Mexico in their second Group C fixture secured a spot in the last 16 by bettering Poland on Wednesday.

Since then however Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni - whose side are second favourites behind Brazil to win the World Cup - has complained about his side's reduced preparation time for such a crucial match.
