The case is about when Olivia Carson and her mother, Amy Carson, challenged Maine's ban on using public funds to pay for religious schools' tuition fees. Here's the recent decision of the Supreme Court on the case.

The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of families who challenged a Maine tuition assistance program that excluded private schools that promote religion, allowing further public support of religious organizations. A lower court decision that had dismissed the families' allegations of religious discrimination in violation of the US Constitution, including the First Amendment's protection of the free exercise of religion, was overturned by the justices on Tuesday by a vote of six to three.

It was the most recent in a string of rulings that have expanded religious freedom in recent years. Chief Justice John Roberts' decision was authored by the court's conservative justices, with the liberal justices dissenting. The decision builds on a 2020 Supreme Court decision in a Montana case that opened the door for additional government money to attend religious schools. In some sparsely populated northern regions of the state without public secondary schools, Maine offers public monies to pay for tuition at private high schools of a family's choosing.

The institutions that are eligible to receive this financial aid for tuition under the programme must be "nonsectarian," and they are disqualified if they advocate for one particular religion or offer content "through the prism of that faith." However, the court's decision came against this rule. So now it has to be seen if Maine's ban is removed from using tuition assistance in religious schools.
