DIY Porch Outdoor Swing Frame Project: Oak Post & Beam Swing with Mortise & Tenon Joints. With all of the projects going on, it is still essential for us to have a place to slow down on the homestead. We harvested a lovely White Oak tree from our future house build location. I hated taking the tree, but it had to go; this way, it would stay with us for years and years. We used our new NEOTEC 92cc chainsaw to fell the tree. It was a bit overkill for this size tree, but I can't help but be gitty using this monster of a chainsaw. We cut the log into three sections thinking about where each log would go in the swing build. With our tractors, Tanja and I can work as a large crew. The TYM T25 allows us to move 1000-pound logs around quickly. Once the logs were harvested, we took them to the sawmill. We own the OS23 by Frontier Sawmills, which made quick work of the beams. A person could use a chainsaw sawmill to get similar results, albeit with much more labor. The design was simple, yet I have never built a mortise & tenon joint before. The swing did not require much accuracy, which was good since this was my first Mortise & Tenon joint. While shaping the wood, I couldn't help but feel nostalgic. I visualized a frontier couple taking a tree to build their house or barn. We used White Oak due to its rot resistance and strength. We love the look of the Shou Sugi Ban. Originating in 18th century Japan, Shou Sugi Ban is a useful and striking method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. We also used Fast2K around the post, creating a waterproof seal around the shaft of the post. We have found Fast2K to be a fantastic long-term product providing strength, waterproofing, and ease of use. Concrete is a thing of the past for jobs like these. Our swing was hand-built by a local craftsman.
