Iron Soldier 3 (PS1) Gameplay (PS3 Upscale)

I wanna say it was 1997, or 1998 when reading the letters section of Gamepro magazine that someone wrote a letter berating the staff who said the Atari Jaguar was dead. They informed GP that a company called Telegames was still releasing new games for the system. Sort of an attempt to give the Jaguar a rebirth. A strange niche for sure, especially in the late 90's, but I mention this because the Iron Soldier name will be a lot more familiar to Jaguar fans than Playstation fans.

Telegames eventually brought the Iron Soldier franchise to the PS1 in Iron Soldier 3, and while I can't get far into this game just yet to fully judge it, I can say they did a solid job on this game. The controls are reminiscent of Gungriffon on the Sega Saturn. Instead of walking forward with the D-pad, you use the R1, or R2 buttons to make your mech move forward or backwards, and you mech automatically walks forward until you change the speed or direction. It does take a bit of getting used to.

From what I have played of this game, I do like it. It's definitely cut from the same cloth as other mech games of it's era, incredibly tough open-field missions, and a lot of stuff to blow up. I'm not sure how, or if you can refill your life during the missions which is what makes the game so hard. I could just be a noob and keep missing how you gain more life, or this game could be like Armored core where you get the life you get to complete each mission, and that's it.

Overall, fun game with a great soundtrack. I'd still rather play Gungriffon, or Armored Core over it, but it's definitely worth playing.
