William Branham's Racist Conversion

William Branham often spoke about his conversion to “Christ” in Roy E. Davis’ church, which he claimed (falsely) to be Baptist. It was a special event — Branham claimed that Davis (who was according to historical record a Pentecostal at the time) baptised him in the Oneness Pentecostal formula. Davis, who had at one time been second in command of the 1915 Ku Klux Klan and a high-ranking member of other white supremacy groups, baptized Branham and mentored him in doctrine. While William Branham’s version of the story does not quite match the recorded history, he does give us clues as to the type of conversion that Davis performed in his life, and the type of ministry that several well-recognized religious figures engaged. In March 1960, Branham described the point of time in which he claimed that his alleged visions started instructing him on places to go and people to see. According to Branham, the vision led him into a black church and he “did not like colored people”. He attributed his hatred of blacks to “being a southerner”, but never mentioned being the second-in-command in a church led by a ranking member of the Ku Klux Klan.
