Selling the Dead!!-Case of Dr. Michael Mastromarino

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration shut down Biomedical Tissue Services (BTS) on October 8, 2005, after its president, Dr. Michael Mastromarino, and two other employees were found guilty of forging numerous consent forms, illegally harvesting human bones, organs, tissue, and other cadaver parts from people waiting to be cremated, and selling the illegally obtained body parts to medical companies.

Oral surgeon Michael Mastromarino had a thriving practice near New York City. Before he developed a painkiller addiction in the early 2000s, things were going very well for him. Due to drug addiction, he eventually lost his medical license after accusations were brought against him.

Mastromarino used his medical knowledge to launch a new company called Biomedical Tissue Services to support his wife and family (BTS). The alleged firm was stocked with donated organs and body parts that would be utilized to assist those who needed transplants.

The issue with BTS wasn't that these body parts were being utilized; rather, it was that they weren't being used with the families of the deceased's consent. Again, watch the video and get detailed information about the case.
