Is it reasonable to pay a contractor half now and half when they finish the work?

Good question.

Be careful doing that. You risk losing 50% of your money and not having the job ever completed by your contractor.

Tell the contractor they have the job and you will pay in full when the work is completed. If they won’t agree to that, be careful. Tell them you won’t advance any money on labor or will only pay a very small amount for labor and only at the job site when people are there working. You also would be wise to buy the materials for them and get them delivered to the job site.

If you give them the money to buy materials very often they will not buy the materials and will use it to pay old bills. So be careful or you may learn a painful lesson about paying 50% upfront and the other 50% when the job is complete.
