En 1972, Volvo rachetait le constructeur néerlandais DAF, s’offrant d’un seul coup une entrée de gamme complétant parfaitement le couple 240/260. Juste en dessous de ce couple mythique se positionne donc la 343, sortie en 1975 mais conçue par DAF. Si les 240 et 260 dispose de leurs coupés (les disgracieux 242/262C), elles compensent leur physique « parpaing » par une image de marque et un « Volvo way of life » affirmé.
