Alpine bird is a type of bird that breeds in the mountains from southern Europe to the Himalayas. Like common swallows, they are migratory, and winter farther south in southern Africa. The alpine Swift is the fastest bird in the Swift family. Swifts have very short legs which are used to cling to vertical surfaces. This type of alpine bird can stay aloft in the air for up to seven months at a time, even drinking water "on the wing". Their important physiological processes, including sleep, can be carried out while in continuous flight.
