Military Affairs The Contentious Kherson Withdrawal
Unfortunately neither the Isium Withdrawal, nor the Lyman Withdrawal were "Defense in Depth" military strategies. ..... And neither was the Kherson Withdrawal.
The Kherson withdrawal was made under the "threat" of a potential... possible... maybe.... might be ... could be .... it seems so .. destruction of the Reservoir wall and a subsequent flooding of the area.
Could the Ukrainians destroy the Dam wall? Yes.
They could target and hit the River Pontoon Crossing with precision weapons. Why could they not then hit the dam wall and destroy it?
Why then did they not do it?
The ONLY reason I can currently think is that General Sergey Surovikin wanted to consolidate and stabilize the Russian Forces due the chaos on the front lines at the time. The fiasco at Pavlovka should be the most obvious example, to everybody, that something was seriously wrong.
