ARCHIVE: Morgan Spurlock-Exposing the 'Big Chicken' Industry (Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!)
FIRST AIRED: 16/12/2019. We speak to Morgan Spurlock, director of ‘Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!’ where he exposes the ‘big chicken’ industry. He exposes the conditions in which chickens are grown, the myth of free-range, the unhealthiness of factory farm chicken and more!
STATEMENT FROM TYSON FOODS:
The farmers who work the land and care for animals are important to us. We want farmers to be successful; if they succeed, we succeed.
We’ve been working with independent poultry farmers on a contract basis since the late 1940s. Contract farming insulates the farmer from the risk of changing market prices for chicken and feed ingredients such as corn and soybean meal, which represents the majority of the cost of raising chicken.
The average farmer has been raising chickens for Tyson Foods for 15 years. Some farm families have been raising chickens for us for three generations. We provide the birds, feed and technical advice, while farmers provide the farm, housing and care. It’s been a relationship we believe works well for both the farmer and the company to increase efficiency and quality, while maintaining affordable prices for consumers.
And, we continue to seek input from farmers, that’s why we formed the Poultry Farmer Advisory Council. And we want farmers to know their rights, which is why we wrote the Contract Poultry Farmers Bill of Rights. Some other resources we provide to help farmers include:

· Farmer Connect App
· Farmcheck® Program
· Tyson Foods Animal Well-Being Advisory Panel
STATEMENT FROM THE NATIONAL CHICKEN COUNCIL:
The National Chicken Council (NCC) is aware of the film “Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!” from filmmaker and activist Morgan Spurlock. His latest stunt is an unfortunate and one-sided hit piece on an industry that provides Americans with the healthiest, most sustainable, affordable, and responsibly raised protein in the market. It is clearly told in a story intended for “entertainment” and not based on facts. If you want to spend $5.99 and 93 minutes of your time to learn that “crispy” really means “fried,” this is the movie for you.
While NCC did not participate in the film’s production, we can say that we’re proud of how U.S. chicken is produced.
Since the movie’s original filming more than three years ago, a lot has changed:
• The chicken industry launched its transparency campaign – Chicken Check In – to answer questions about chicken production;
• NCC’s animal welfare guidelines were updated and certified by an independent audit certification organization;
• All quick service restaurants now post calories on their menus; and
• The majority of chicken farmers today are thriving and helping to produce America’s #1 protein.
We invite anyone interested in seeing first-hand thereal story of broiler chickens to watch NCC’s 360° video series. These videos show chickens’ journey, from their first day in a hatchery to how they’re cared for on the farm. Our members use industry leading and third-party certified animal welfare practices to ensure the birds are raised as healthy as possible. The national flock is as healthy as it’s ever been.
We are also proud to share that the overwhelming majority of the 25,000 farm families who partner with chicken companies are satisfied with their relationship. In fact, almost 95% of all contract farmers are retained year-over-year by the same company, and most companies have waiting lists of farmers wanting to enter a partnership. The ultimate success of the chicken company depends on the farmer.
Finally, we do want to confirm one of the few accuracies in the film: NCC’s Tom Super indeed did not attend the opening of Spurlock’s restaurant stunt despite his “made-for-film” method of providing an invitation.
STATEMENT FROM PURDUE FARMS:
We do not believe that Morgan Spurlock has provided a true depiction of chicken production. His latest film only portrays select slivers of chicken production – as told in a story intended for “entertainment” and not necessarily based in accurate facts.
Perdue is proud of our animal care practices that go beyond what most companies do, and our relationships with our farmer partners – many of whom have been with us for years. We even have numerous multi-generations of family farmers who work with us as well.
