A recent study has claimed that an almost 3-ton sunfish, found close to a Portuguese island, has broken the previous record for weight. The sunfish, known as Mola alexandrini or the gigantic sunfish, was discovered on the shores of Faial Island in the Azores archipelago.The new paper, released on October 11 in the Journal of Fish Biology, describes the results of the researchers' dissection of the enormous sunfish. The fish measures 3.5 m in length and 3.6 m in height, and it is 2,744 kg in weight. In addition, the scientists extracted a sample of the sunfish's DNA and examined the contents of its stomach.The previous record for heaviest sunfish was held by a fish caught in Japan in 1996 and weighed roughly 2,300 kg. Sunfish have rounded bodies and frequently bask in the sunlight at the ocean's surface, which, according to scientists, is how they warm up after spending extended periods diving into chilly, dark waters in search of food.
