Matthew Thurber: From Sea-Wrack to Dumpster, or how the Pirates of the Condominium were Unionized.

Over the past year I have been working on a project I think of as a newspaper but which is also a kind of assemblage or organism, called “Pirates of The Condominium”. This project is allowed to transform into different materials. Informed by role playing games, it has become both an ongoing 16mm film project and also a monthly subscription zine.

Pirates of the Condominium confronts visible changes brought about by social engineering, development, capitalism. I grew up on an island and now live in the seaside town of Greenpoint– this project is infested by the mythology of pirates, sailors, and undersea civilizations as well as my direct daily observations.

Matthew Thurber is an artist and musician living in xxx. He is the author of numerous comics including 1-800-MICE and INFOMANIACS. Thurber is the co-founder of Tomato House gallery and of the Potlatch, I Gather books-on-tape label. He performs as Ambergris, and with Brian Belott as Court Stenographer and Young Sherlock Holmes. http://www.matthewthurber.com
